Residential Building Lohn
Val Schons, Switzerland
In keeping with the traditional building methods of the Val Schons – where most residential buildings are constructed monolithically from quarry stone – Porotherm blocks were chosen for this house with an annex. A perforated façade featuring windows of varying sizes and window frames set at different depths within the masonry adds subtle accents to the simple exterior. The façade is rendered in lime. To allow this raw material to show off its natural colour, only a waterproofing treatment has been applied. Due to the very steep terrain – three storeys on the valley side and one storey on the mountain side – the house on the mountain side, with a barn entrance and a large wooden sliding gate, appears to complement the structure as a stable. The overall composition forms a modern continuation of the local building culture.
