Hermann-Platz
Bad Muskau, Germany
With the discontinuation of stationary border controls with the Republic of Poland, the Federal Office for Real Estate dismantled the above-ground border crossing facilities.
However, the traffic areas were not reorganized. The border forecourt in Bad Muskau is located at the interface between the urban space and the park landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Muskau Park. The project scope includes the squares to be created at the bridgehead (connection to the Republic of Poland), the crossings into the palace and spa park along the Neisse River, and the adjacent Görlitzer Straße street.
The attached plan was developed as part of an urban development competition and qualified until planning approval.
As a result, the area of the former border crossing facing the city will be redefined as a hybrid between a square and a garden. Taking into account the historical situation from 1919, a square paved with natural stone will be created that will assume all necessary access functions and also create space for events.
