Denso Global R&D Tokyo Haneda
Ota-ku, Tokyo, Japan
"This facility serves as the advanced mobility R&D hub for DENSO Corporation, one of the world’s largest automotive parts manufacturers, with a primary focus on automated driving technologies.
Unlike conventional automobile development, autonomous driving requires constant iteration between software and hardware. To remain competitive globally, it is not enough to develop these independently—close collaboration with the teams preparing and testing vehicles is indispensable.
The facility consists of three main components: an office building for software and hardware development; an automotive service building, whose first floor (vehicle pit) is dedicated to maintaining test vehicles and analyzing experimental results, with a mezzanine where a team is permanently stationed to outfit prototype cars; and an outdoor proving ground for on-road testing. By cycling rapidly between test runs on the proving ground and refinement in the vehicle pit, the facility enables an accelerated development process.
At the heart of this system is the main vehicle pit, conceived as a shared space where both people and vehicles circulate. It is here that verification and fine-tuning take place directly, making it the critical engine that drives development forward. Every aspect—from detailed configurations to signage planning—was carefully coordinated with the client to ensure a space where innovation can advance both safely and swiftly.
Through this architecture, we aimed to create an environment that contributes, even in a modest way, to the future of mobility innovation in Japan."
