From One Sheet
Japan
This chair was awarded in a design competition organized by Tendo Mokko, the furniture manufacturer renowned for Sori Yanagi’s Butterfly Stool.
The idea is extremely simple: a single sheet of plywood is incised with stripe-like cuts and then carefully bent while adjusting its curvature.
Through this simple operation, we sought to reveal a new sense of presence and beauty in plywood.
When not in use, the chair resembles a plywood sculpture; when someone sits on it, it appears as though the material itself has naturally flexed to accommodate the body. In this way, it embodies a quiet and graceful duality.
