The World Monuments Fund has revealed its 2022 World Monuments Watch, "a selection of 25 heritage sites of extraordinary cultural significance facing global challenges and whose preservation is urgent and vital to local communities." A video announcement discusses some of the sites and the challenges they face.
In Monday's announcement of the biennial list, the WMF points out that many of the sites "illuminate the effects of global issues such as climate change, imbalanced tourism, underrepresentation, and recovery from crisis."
Culled from more than 225 nominations, the sites in the watch list represent two-dozen countries and span nearly 12,000 years of history.
Watch the eight-minute film, below, for some general information on the 2022 World Monuments Watch and insight on a few of the sites, and visit the WMF website to see all of the heritage sites.
