Yalla Yalla! - studio for change creates with 1200 green vegetable crates the design for the exhibition Helden der Stadt (translates as Heroes of the City), which is on display at the Ernst-Bloch-Centre in Ludwigshafen, Germany, from 20 May to 31 July, 2015.

The exhibition reflects on different aspects of the do-it-yourself culture and contemporary urban trends, such as urban gardening, repair cafes and temporary interventions. With the dissemination of these trends and new approaches to co-creating the city, the exhibition supports the transition towards a sustainable, inclusive and more cooperative society.

The design concept avoids white neutral walls, usually used for exhibitions, and replaces them with an everyday object – the vegetable crate, which is also found in urban gardens.

The design creates a walk-through installation that organizes the exhibition space. At the same time it divides the space spatially according to the different topics of the exhibition. Robin Lang from Yalla Yalla! - studio for change explains: "The installlation can be thought of as an analogy of the city and the urban realm – the discovery of different locations in the urban fabric was transformed into the discovery of the different items and exhibits."

With the selection of the materials, the designers reflect on the style of the do-it-yourself culture and intensify it in their design. Thereby the designers allude to the reuse of everyday objects as well as to the sometimes improvised character of the do-it-yourself culture.

The OSB (oriented strand boards) are used as constructive elements from which the vegetable crates gain their stability. Furthermore, several of the crates are connected to each other, building clusters to gain further stability.
