'The Beating Heart of Birmingham'
As part of their recently unveiled design for Birmingham City Football Club’s new stadium, Heatherwick Studio and MANICA, with filmmaker Steven Knight, have released a short film explaining their design that is anchored by twelve towering chimney-like structures visible from miles away.
Unveiled late last week, the 62,000-capacity stadium will feature a retractable roof and moveable pitch, both enabling the stadium to be used for Birmingham City Footbal Club's matches as well as for concerts. The twelve chimney-like structures, while tapping into Birmingham's history of brick manufacturing, support the roof, ensuring that no seats are blocked by columns; they also house lifts and staircases, and function as part of the stadium’s passive ventilation strategy. The top of one of the chimneys will even house the highest bar in Birmingham. The team is hoping for the new stadium to be completed for the start of the 2030/2031 football season.
