Flip-N-Fry
Maaßenstraße 9, Berlin, Germania
The goal of the lighting concept was to create a visible identity from the outside that shapes the appearance of Flip-N-Fry and clearly expresses the brand’s character. The architectural foundation by Bruzkus Greenberg defines the restaurant as a cheerful, family-friendly space characterized by bold colors, clear material contrasts, and custom-made furniture. Building on this, Studio De Schutter developed a lighting concept that atmospherically supports this architectural clarity.
The elongated dining area – typical of Berlin’s historic buildings – receives daylight from only one side. Artificial lighting complements the diminishing daylight and ensures consistent, inviting brightness throughout the space. Linear ceiling-mounted luminaires provide orientation and form a graphic pattern that is also visible from outside. The light itself becomes a brand signature – an element designed to recur and evolve in future locations.
Even from the street, the lighting draws attention. Bright, clear lines create dynamism, structure the space, and reinforce the brand’s recognizability. Inside, this graphic language continues – bright, shadow-free, and welcoming. A lighting design that not only highlights the burgers, but also elevates the brand experience itself.
The color concept by Bruzkus Greenberg relies on clear zoning and defined color areas. Studio De Schutter translates this architectural color structure into light. In joint sample tests with the architects and the client, the interaction of color, surface, and light quality was carefully refined.
As light perception is always subjective, the decision-making process was closely coordinated with the client. The team visited various restaurants in Berlin together to directly experience and compare brightness, color temperature, and atmosphere. These shared impressions formed the basis for the final lighting atmosphere.
The result is a warm white light at 3000 Kelvin with a color rendering index above 95 – ideal for emphasizing the terracotta and yellow tones as well as the appetizing colors of burgers and fries. The light makes surfaces glow, with reflections extending across the glossy epoxy floor – a deliberate material choice by Bruzkus Greenberg that creates depth and movement while highlighting the interaction between light and material. Wall-mounted globe luminaires reflect in dark glass surfaces, creating a vivid interplay of light and reflection that continues into the adjacent spaces.
As with all Studio De Schutter projects, sustainability played a central role. The lighting system was designed to be modular, replaceable, and expandable – a long-lasting solution that adapts to future requirements. Ecological responsibility was also an essential part of the concept: materials were selected based on recyclability and low environmental impact. The modular construction allows for easy maintenance and reduces waste during future adjustments.
