Small-scale development on a mediaeval plot structure, the remnants of a Baroque bastion and modest more recent buildings define the character of the place where the new Sparkasse is to be built. The inconsistencies of this ëbackyardí have a certain charm and possess the potential to become a special place. The Sparkasse building develops its urban figure from this setting: individual building elements, suited to the scale of the surroundings, are combined to create a large entity. The edge of the old bastion is taken up, the stepping and terracing of the building along Florentiusgraben, which was deemed necessary, help it form a suitable counterpart to the existing development. The lower plinth section holds everything together and, with its terraces, draws the surrounding open space into the building.
