Butai House
Kunitachi-city, Tokyo, Japan
The site is located in a beautifully landscaped residential area in the university town of Kunitachi. The living and dining rooms, where the family spends most of its time, are surrounded by the garden and other rooms in a U-shape.
Reflecting the lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere of Kunitachi, the garden is placed along the front road, creating a breathing space in the typically dense residential landscape and offering a generous approach to the home. Upon opening the gate, one is greeted by the garden, and beyond it lies the living room where the family relaxes.
A storage room is positioned lengthwise along the same axis as the approach to the house, supporting the behind-the-scenes functions of daily life. The second floor is intended to become a children's room in the future, but instead of traditional enclosed private rooms, it is divided only by walls approximately two meters high to maintain visual privacy. The ceiling is shared with the living room below, and a small window allows for communication between floors.
Sunlight from the high side windows fills both levels with brightness throughout the day. When the living room doors are opened, the garden, sky, and expansive interior merge into one, creating an even more open and liberating space.
