The 410 works nominated for this, the 20th cycle of the EUmies Award, were announced in November. From that lengthy list, the jury—headed by Smiljan Radić and featuring Carl Bäckstrand, Chris Briffa, Zaiga Gaile, Tina Gregorič, Nikolaus Hirsch, and Rosa Rull—selected the shortlist of 40 works. From this list of 40, seven finalists will be determined and then announced in early February.

The 40 shortlisted works are located in 18 countries, the highest numbers in France (9), Spain (7), Denmark (4), and Belgium (3), with the remaining countries (all of them are listed below in alphabetical order) featuring one or two shortlisted works. And while some countries surprisingly did not see any of their nominated works advance (Germany, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Ukraine), at least one country—Tunisia—is seeing its first nominee ever shortlisted.

Typologically, the shortlisted works are fairly diverse, with fifteen programmatic types represented, including culture (8 works), mixed-use (6), education (5), and landscape (4). Indicative of recent trends, the 40 works are nearly evenly split between regeneration and new construction—the former encompassing 21 works and the latter 17, with two works defined as extensions. An embrace of reuse is echoed by the remarks of jury member Tine Gregorič:

“Architecture today should also surprise, inspire, and explore what is possible. The most compelling works combine innovation with respect for existing structures, materials, and communities. By rethinking regeneration, reuse, and collective housing, we can create architecture that not only serves people but also expands the creative potential of our
profession.”

The 40 shortlisted works are listed below in alphabetical order by country with links to the individual projects on the EUmies Awards website. The winners of the 2026 EUmies Awards—one Architecture winner and one Emerging Architecture winner—will be announced during the EUmies Awards Day, held at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona in May.
