Piet Oudolf, in a short film made for The World Around Summit 2026, speaks from his home and studio in Hummelo, Netherlands, about his landscape design for Calder Gardens, the art institution and Herzog & de Meuron-designed building that opened to the public in Philadephia last year.
The World Around Summit 2026 took place at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on Saturday, May 9. The all-day event was consisted of live presentations and panel discussions, as well as original videos such as Oudolf's, all "highlighting the multidisciplinary voices at the forefront of ‘Architecture’s Now, Near & Next’.” People with five hours of free time can watch the Summit in its entirety, but for everyone else—most people, that is—thankfully The World Around has been releasing the shorter talks and presentations as individual videos in the days and weeks since. The 9-minute film on Piet Oudolf's contribution to Calder Gardens is worth watching, not only because Calder Gardens was an architectural highlight of 2025, but for the insight it provides on Oudolf's working process and his methodical design for the garden that sits next to Herzog & de Meuron's reflective building.
