Taj Bangalore
The design of Taj Bangalore redefines transit hospitality within a busy airport precinct by reinforcing connectivity and comfort for the new-age traveller.
Bengaluru International Airport has become a defining symbol of the city’s ambitions as a global technology and innovation hub. A joint venture between Taj and Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), Taj Bangalore is located near Terminal 1. The hotel’s new extension meets the increasing demand for high-quality accommodation and diverse hospitality options, catering to both business and leisure travellers. The extension features 220 guest rooms, offering a mix of standard double rooms and premium corner suites, positioned strategically for maximum privacy and the best runway views. It complements the luxury focus of the first phase while expanding its client base.
The architectural layout adopts a C-shaped configuration, its two wings optimising panoramic views and maximising daylight penetration. The form takes cues from the traditional courtyard structures in the region, creating a spatial arrangement that feels both contemporary and contextually rooted. The connections between the two phases of the hotel are designed to prioritise guest convenience and operational efficiency. A ground-level corridor directly integrates the lobbies of both phases, allowing for streamlined access. This arrangement is further articulated through a bridge at the third level, punctuating the building’s facade and lending it a dynamic character. Beyond its functional role in linking the two phases, it offers sweeping views of the airport runways and terminals, reinforcing the hotel’s integration with its aviation surroundings.
At the heart of the design is a grand five-level atrium, which draws in abundant natural light through its expansive skylit roof. Anchored by a sculptural tree-inspired installation, the atrium is a symbolic reference to the iconic banyan trees of Bengaluru, reflecting the city’s identity as the ‘Garden City’. Surrounding the lobby and the all-day dining area on the ground floor are landscaped sunken courts that offer tranquil spaces for rest and relaxation. This sense of indoor-outdoor connection is further amplified by a semi-open restaurant on the fifth floor, inspired by the typology of traditional open-air pavilions, offering diners panoramic views of the runways and a unique dining experience.
The interiors feature a neutral palette of Serpeggiante marble, wood, and locally sourced Sadarhalli granite, accented with highlights of green and blue hues drawn from Bengaluru’s natural landscapes—its verdant hills, lakes, and rivers. Custom-designed carpets, wall panels, and furnishings incorporate motifs inspired by regional craftsmanship, while curated artworks by local artisans add depth to the guest experience.
The facade is a play of vertical planes with Sadarhalli granite-clad massing employed in combination with glass. The use of local materials reduces the building’s environmental impact, while the morphology harnesses prevailing winds and promotes self-shading, enhancing ventilation in public spaces. These measures collectively lower energy consumption while ensuring guest comfort.
Taj Bangalore redefines the hospitality landscape at Bengaluru International Airport, creating a destination that caters to the needs of modern travellers. With its expanded accommodations, well-planned connectivity, and incorporation of cultural and sustainable practices, the project elevates the airport hotel experience. Positioned at the intersection of global travel and Bengaluru’s identity as a technology hub, Taj Bangalore stands as a benchmark for innovative transit-oriented development.
