Watch Sean Mowry's All the Queens Houses, a profile of architect Rafael Herrin-Ferri and his book All The Queens Houses: An Architectural Portrait of New York's Largest and Most Diverse Borough.
Like Rafael Herrin-Ferri, I live in Queens. And like him, I see the borough's multifaceted architecture as an expression of its ethnic and cultural diversity. Brooklyn has its brownstones and Manhattan its skyline, but Queens is a cacophony of different architectural expressions jostling with each other building by building, block after block. This is especially true of the houses that Herrin-Ferri documents in his popular 2021 book All the Queens Houses. (The book was so popular a followup, All the Queens Gardens, came out last year.) Filmmaker Sean Mowry, also a Queens resident, must also be a fan of the book, for his short film on Herrin-Ferri's photo documentation of the borough's residential architecture marks his debut. It premiered at DOC NYC 2025, is a Staff Pick on Vimeo, and is highly recommended by this Queens resident.
