ARCHSTUDIO

The project originated from a public-interest initiative launched by the Shenzhen Municipal Working Committee on Women and Children. ARCHSTUDIO was invited to design a themed family suite for the hotel within the Shenzhen Women and Children’s Center.

With a floor area of 130 square meters and an irregular rhombus-shaped layout, the space was originally configured as a two-bedroom suite. Moving beyond symbolic décor typical of themed rooms, ARCHSTUDIO conceived the space as an explorable “mountain” that integrates family accommodation with play, natural exploration, and human-friendly scale. It caters to children’s instinct for play and exploration and offers adults a sense of natural ease, creating a pleasant and tactile family lodging experience that evokes the sensation of wandering through the mountains.

A 35-centimeter height module establishes the terraced slopes of the “mountain,” integrating hotel functions like living, dining, sleeping, and bathing with playful zones where children can jump, slide, crawl, sit, and rest. The three-dimensional circulation loop—beginning at the foot of the mountain, ascending to the slope, passing through the tunnel and rope net at the peak, and descending via a slide—encourages children’s full physical and sensory engagement. Two independent bathrooms are discreetly inserted into “caves” within the mountain, providing wet-dry separation while maintaining visual openness through glass partitions. Three sleeping platforms at different heights allow the suite to flexibly accommodate multi-generational families, adding versatility to the space.

The “mountain” is wrapped in soft cork with walnut inlays, and all platform edges are rounded to ensure safety. Upholstery in pine-green fabric, paired with animal-shaped furniture and lighting, evokes the natural textures of mountain forests and grasslands, reinforcing the immersive atmosphere. The suite’s design seeks to transform every family’s stay into an unforgettable "mountain adventure," a spatial journey that becomes a vessel for shared memories and lasting bonds.
