West Village Duplex

Located in the West Village of New York City, this duplex apartment renovation began with a single focal point, the central double-height stair hall. Homeowner and interior designer Purvi Padia wanted to replace an existing straight-run glass-and-wood stair and create a staircase that would feel special from every vantage point. She engaged The Turett Collaborative (TTC) to develop a new stair and to rethink the surrounding residential spaces for her family’s daily life.

TTC studied multiple curved stair configurations through sketches, renderings, and physical and 3D-printed models of the stair hall. The final design rises from a wave-like base and is encased in a plaster shell that sweeps through the double-height space, bringing a softer, sculptural presence to the residence and improving the entry sequence. The stair’s geometry also allowed adjacent areas to be reworked to improve circulation and add storage and amenities.

The stair and entry work became the catalyst for a broader reorganization of the duplex apartment. On the upper level, half of the floor was reorganized to absorb a small bedroom and bathroom into the primary suite, creating a larger suite with a secondary elevator entrance, walk-in closets, and an ensuite study. The primary bathroom was revised to establish a central entry that frames views of Lower Manhattan with a freestanding tub in the foreground. The result is a tailored renovation shaped through close collaboration, with the staircase serving as the design anchor for the home’s larger transformation as a private family home in New York City.
