Trout Residence

Contrasting forms complement one another in an asymmetrical low-slung design intended to maximize viewshed while minimizing impact on this highly-visible, panoramic site. Architects accomplished the dual feat by employing distinctive formal elements with a muted earthy traditional material palette. The formal composition of converging disparate shapes culminates on the north-facing exposure where a jagged, Teton-like triangular roofline contrasts sharply with a swooping glass-and-steel railing and semi-circular porch. Interior spaces play off the stunning effect with floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the vertical planes. The entry hall, which greets visitors with a view of the Grand Teton through a wall of glass across the barrel-vaulted living room, sets the tone for the experience, while interior features such as wood-wrapped steel columns that seem to float between levels and recessed ceiling panels that deemphasize horizontal massing reinforce the design’s overall buoyancy.
