The critical factor in car dealership design is functionality. Handling of volume for parking and operational processes is of paramount importance. In designing Audi’s new lighthouse dealership, CDR Studio placed an emphasis on finding creative ways to merge the logistics of an active facility – such as vehicle service and customer sales – with iconic requirements of a brand showcase event space.
Audi Manhattan was completed in the summer of 2012. The 220,000 sq ft building is located at 11th Avenue and 55th Street and houses a new showroom with potential development for multiple upper-level showrooms and all new service floors. With 40,000 square feet of active vehicle service bays and adjoining support spaces necessary to serve the projected 250 vehicles that will arrive here each day for service repairs, the functional elements of the program constitute roughly half of the proposed area of the Terminal. Solving the logistical challenges presented by this multi-layered program was critical to the smooth operation of the Terminal dealership. The design also coincides with the palette and aesthetic of the Terminal prototype, helping to promote Audi’s worldwide luxury brand image.
