Australian Gold Medal to Alec Tzannes

The 2018 Gold Medal, the highest honor of the Australian Institute of Architects -- given to "architects who have designed or executed buildings of high merit, produced work of great distinction resulting in the advancement of architecture or endowed the profession of architecture in a distinguished manner" -- has been awarded to architect and educator Alec Tzannes.
Tzannes is founding director of his eponymous studio based in Sydney, he has served as National President of the Australian Institute of Architects, and he is former dean and now Emeritus Professor of UNSW Built Environment. Echoing his work in practice and academia, the jury (chaired by Richard Kirk and incluidng Ken Maher, Philip Goad, Andrea Nield and Penelope Seidler) explained his worthiness in receiving the Gold Medal:
Some examples of his educational, residential and institutional projects are highlighted below.The outstanding contribution Alec Tzannes has made to the architectural profession exemplifies the highest level of achievement within each of the criteria. He has executed an exceptional body of work across a broad spectrum of architectural practice. Alec has given exemplary service and leadership within the profession, academia and related fields. ... A visionary leader, Alec is one of Australia’s most accomplished architects, designers and urban strategists. He is a consummate creator and an insightful thinker with an extensive portfolio of work from over three decades of professional practice. ... His dedication to teaching, research and pedagogy has contributed significantly to the health of the profession in the future. Alec’s engagement in a wide range of advisory roles continues to strengthen the value and standing of architects within government and the community. Alec is a consummate advocate for architecture and a great champion of the architectural profession.
