Upper East Side Penthouse

Designed for a single owner, this 2,400-square-foot triplex penthouse occupies the upper floors of a new condominium development on East 73rd Street. The Turett Collaborative worked closely with the building architects and the client to create a light-filled home defined by a small number of highly crafted architectural elements, tailored around material, structure, and detail.

A two-story wall of hand-selected Vals quartzite forms the organizing spine of the apartment. Wayne Turett and the client selected the stone directly from its quarry in Vals, Switzerland, establishing a singular material presence that anchors the triplex. Built-in shelves and niches are integrated into the stone wall, reinforcing its role as both feature and structure.

Circulation is shaped by a soaring triple-height stair constructed of steel and resin. Laser-cut steel supports and translucent resin treads create a staircase that feels both substantial and visually light, with portions cantilevering outward and, at the upper levels, transitioning into a bridge suspended across the three-story space. A clear glass enclosure contains a full bathroom positioned between the primary bedroom and a study, with glass walls that can be made opaque for privacy at the flip of a switch. Above, a lounge opens to a landscaped roof terrace and sun deck.

Together, these elements define a one-of-a-kind penthouse shaped through close collaboration and meticulous attention to craft.
