House, Saugerties

Saugerties, USA

Situated on the site of a former bluestone quarry
approximately one hundred miles north of New York City,
the House in Saugerties occupies a forest clearing once
defined by a pond. The design responds to the site’s
natural topography, extending across a descending ridge
at the edge of the clearing.
A cast-in-place concrete ramp leads to a low, linear
structure composed of steel, wood, and glass. A
suspended deck wraps the exterior, providing access from
all sides and connecting the interior to the surrounding
landscape. The plan is organized into three parts:
bedrooms and service spaces at each end frame a central
open living area. Within this glass enclosure, a kitchen
island and freestanding fireplace define distinct functional
zones.
A white-painted steel frame supports a corrugated metal
ceiling and light wood floor, articulating the structural
system with material clarity. Through restraint and
precision, the house establishes a quiet dialogue between
architecture and site.
