Renovation of a terraced Single-Family House
This narrow terraced single-family house, built around 1890, stands not far from the Binz industrial area, which developed alongside workers' housing at the turn of the 20th century. The surrounding houses from that era, with their plastered facades, shutters, and pitched roofs, still characterize the neighborhood's historic charm.
A young family initiated the comprehensive renovation of the aging house. The goal was to preserve its historic character while simultaneously creating modern living comforts—a balancing act that shaped all planning decisions.
First, the building's structure was thoroughly upgraded. Due to the settlement-sensitive Uetliberg clay beneath the building, the foundation had to be reinforced with micropiles. The interior wooden beam ceilings were also renewed and structurally reinforced to meet modern requirements. A new, delicate steel staircase now connects all floors, replacing the old stairwell with a lightweight, open structure.
The floor plans were reorganized to create more spacious living spaces with more direct access to the garden. On the ground floor, large glazing opens the living space to the garden, creating a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. Additionally, new wet rooms were incorporated into the existing structure to meet increased demands for comfort.
The design concept emphasizes restraint and authenticity. A calm, light color scheme and natural materials dominate the interiors, lending the house a friendly, contemporary atmosphere. At the same time, historical details were preserved or reinterpreted in a contemporary style wherever possible—be it an original profile on the façade or traditional fittings inside.
Externally, the building remains true to its era: the facade received a new, heritage-compliant paint job and authentic windows with integrated sun protection. Behind the historic shell, modern building technology is now installed: an air-source heat pump, improved insulation, and a refurbished roof increase energy efficiency and living comfort.
Thus, the renovated terraced house meets the requirements of contemporary living for the young family without losing its charm.
