Vianova

Flims, Switzerland

This historical building from 1882 marks the entrance to the village of Flims in the Swiss alps. The client wanted a holiday home with character in the mountains and found a property with a lot spatial potential to realize this dream. Locked away in the attic, this space on first sight was very small and claustrophobic. To bring out its full size and body, it was clear that we had to be unfold it in three dimensions and reveal as much as possible. Besides opening up the hidden roof, the main concept of Vianova was to find a mix between traditional and contemporary styles and make them blend in together as one. By revealing the pitched roof, the ancient wooden structure was also brought into the light and all spaces gained a new, larger scale.

Most of the historical valuable paneling was preserved and new features were added on to it. By doing so, we established a window into the history of the building and created a liaison with the traditional Graubündner building style. We picked up on this tradition, by reinventing the paneling and creating a new layer draped in a more traditional color, defining the living areas. The white roof sits on top of this layer as a mountain peak, and therefore feels light and dynamic. There are continuous vistas from all sides inside the building and through the skylights the Flimserstein emerges. This new home is ready to welcome its guests and enjoy their stay the best way possible.
