Open Walls – A Gallery Building for České Budějovice
Our design for the new gallery building is planned at a special site on the edge of the historic center of České Budějovice, where the former city walls once stood. The design of both the building and the adjacent square offers the opportunity to give this area a new significance. Our concept draws on elements of the historic city walls and translates them into a contemporary architectural language. Particular emphasis is placed on creating a building that is open and accessible to the city and its people.
With its pentagonal footprint, the building adapts to the geometry of the site, gradually tapering toward the top and recalling the form of a historic fortress tower. The uppermost floor is set back and is intended to accommodate office spaces as well as a bar with panoramic views.
