Shanghai was hosting the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships in 2011. This required the construction of a new 347,000m2 sports center comprising a new sports stadium, swimming stadium, an open-air pool for high-diving competitions, plus a media center. An artificial lake is the connecting element between the various stadiums. The buildings stand on raised platforms, which project into the lake. This produces a softly curving shore on the north side round the circular stadiums and a straight edge on the south side for the open-air pool.
