Roots is part of the Open Mind Places in Referinghausen, located in the Sauerland region of Germany. This installation was collectively built using a spruce tree that succumbed to hot summers caused by climate change. Unlike traditional perspectives, the installation invites visitors to view the tree from below, exposing its roots and prompting reflection on deeper environmental challenges.

Spruce trees are originally native to high-mountain landscapes, where their shallow root systems are well-suited to the terrain. However, they are also widely planted in mid-mountain regions for economic reasons. Unfortunately, these shallow roots are inadequate to withstand the increasingly hot and dry summers brought on by climate change.

The installation highlights the urgent need for more resilient tree species with deeper root systems. It serves as a reminder that we cannot continue with traditional forestry practices. Instead, we must focus on creating biodiverse woodlands capable of adapting to a changing climate.

By rethinking our relationship with nature, Roots encourages dialogue and action toward a regenerative future.
