Residential Building Baslerstrasse
Allschwil, Switzerland
The densification of the suburban neighborhoods in Allschwil is in full swing. The stately house on the plot on Baslerstrasse also had to make way for an apartment building. The angled design of the elongated building allows for varied and high-quality outdoor spaces and, with its staggered façades, contributes to good integration into the neighborhood. The scale is based on the original small-scale development and stands out from the newer, bulky residential buildings. The façades are structured in the window area by means of rounded horizontal bands, some of which run across the corners of the building. They emphasize the horizontal appearance and thematize the angled shape.
The apartment building houses 9 apartments on three full floors and one attic floor. In the basement there is a parking garage, the necessary cellar and technical rooms as well as a bicycle room. A naturally lit staircase in the joint of the building provides access to three apartments per floor as well as the attic apartment. The generous rounded staircase eye gives the building a center with strong visual impact and high identification. The apartments are compactly organized, the corridors with adjoining rooms lead into the open living and dining area, which opens up to the outside space via the covered balconies and seating areas. The shape of the building allows individual orientation of the apartments in different directions.
The building is of solid construction. The exterior walls consist of an inner load-bearing layer of brick with plastered exterior insulation made of mineral wool or back-ventilated metallic facade cladding in the area of the window bands. The energy-efficient and sustainable construction method is supported by the careful handling of room areas and sizes and the building services equipment with a ground-source heat pump heating system, residential ventilation with heat recovery and a photovoltaic system.
