The construction of the Police and Justice Center (PJZ) on the former Güterbahnhof site in Zurich will create a center of excellence for fighting crime. The PJZ allows for the consolidation of the cantonal police forces which are currently spread over more than 30 locations, as well as a police detention facility, law enforcement command center, and the new Zurich district prison. The enclosed structure and its landscaped inner courtyards respond to the surrounding urban typology of Zurich’s Fourth District. A complex programme consisting of administration and command, prison, crime museum, and various infrastructure facilities such as restaurants, sports halls, and lecture rooms, is integrated into the large form. The architectural expression adopts themes from the classic, long-lasting administrative building, with plinth, perforated windows, and natural stone, and implements them into a contemporary design and building style. Themes of safety, economic efficiency in construction, and operational effectiveness are taken into account as self-evident premises. The Hotz Partner act as both general planner and architect.
