Kindergarten St.Laurentius
Feldkirchen- Westerham, Germany
The new St. Laurentius Parish Kindergarten is located in the center of Feldkirchen-Westerham, a town in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim—directly opposite the associated Catholic church. The kindergarten and its outdoor area, shaded by old chestnut trees, border the parish garden that belongs to the existing rectory. Adding to the idyllic setting is a small brook that offers children opportunities for exploration and discovery.
The two-story building with a pitched roof and brick façade blends harmoniously into the urban surroundings with a modern yet restrained appearance. The ground-floor kindergarten houses two group rooms, each accommodating 25 children aged three to six, equipped with dedicated activity corners. A spacious cloakroom connects the two group rooms. Also located on the ground floor are the multi-purpose room (which also serves as a lunch area), a large sanitary area with an adjacent changing room including a shower, a staff restroom, the main kitchen, and a hallway play area.
A long wooden staircase leads to the upper floor, which features a bright multipurpose room. This level also includes a paper storage room, a service kitchen, a children’s restroom, a barrier-free restroom (accessible via lift), a staff room, and the director’s office. All rooms have linoleum flooring and generous glazing. On the ground floor, large panoramic windows facing the outdoor area can be opened, seamlessly connecting the group rooms with the exterior space.
The adjoining connecting structure serves as an equipment shed and garage, and also houses additional toilets. Both the main building and the connecting structure are constructed of reinforced concrete and clad with ventilated brick and larch wood façades. Since the existing rectory is roofed with slate, the same material was chosen for the new building’s roof.
The new outdoor area features a swing, a large multi-functional play structure, slides, and a separate sandbox.
