Houses Witterswilerstrasse
Baettwil, Switzerland
The row houses are located in the center of Bättwil, on the grounds of a historic farmhouse with a large barn. Access is provided from Benkenstrasse through the barn, which has been converted into apartments and also houses the entrance to the underground parking garage. There is also direct pedestrian and bicycle access from Witterswilerstrasse.
The building is designed to blend seamlessly into the existing historical fabric and be perceived as a complement to the development. This allows the new building to distinguish itself from the heterogeneous surroundings. The design features a simple structure with a pitched roof, tiled roof, and wooden facade. Despite this, the new building should still be clearly recognizable as such. The careful detailing of projections and recesses, along with differentiated wooden cladding, creates a subtle modernity, indicating that it contains several residential units.
The stairwells are located on the entrance facade of each of the four houses. This allows the elevation change to be accommodated by the staircase, maximizing floor plan flexibility. The kitchen, with its integrated wardrobe, stands freely in the room like a piece of furniture, dividing the open floor plan into dining and living areas. The living area opens south onto the covered patio. Upstairs, each house contains two spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The attic can be used for two bedrooms or one large room with a shower and dressing room. The basement is constructed solidly, while the upper floors are built with prefabricated timber elements and ventilated larch wood facades. The flexible room layout and simple, honest construction result in houses with high-quality living space at reasonable prices.
