House Neuhofweg
Binningen, Switzerland
This two-story detached house is located near the city of Basel on a hilltop in a residential area of a suburban municipality. Set slightly back from the street, a private path leads to the park-like grounds and the house, which is located on the north side. Various projections and recesses, as well as the rounded corners with varying radii, give the building a sculptural and dynamic appearance.
This is accentuated by the uniform use of concrete and the varied design of the openings. The windows on the north, west, and east sides are set back behind the facade, which in these areas acts as a filter with small, round openings. In contrast, larger openings are located on the south side.
The curves continue inside, creating a captivating sequence of spaces. From the living room, a spiral staircase leads to the upper floor with its meandering gallery, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an open-plan office. An exterior single-flight staircase provides access to the roof terrace with panoramic views. The basement contains a guest room and a spacious, open-plan multi-purpose room, both naturally lit via a courtyard.
Maritime pine plywood panels, raw steel, concrete terrazzo flooring and exposed concrete walls are an expression of an honest, simple materiality of the interior.
