Campus in the Park
Speisingerstraße 44, Wien, Austria
The 5,400 m² extension will expand the existing “Schule im Park” to include 10 classrooms, 4 group rooms, multifunctional areas, a gymnasium, an activity room, and a dining hall, transforming it into a campus school with a kindergarten and elementary school for children aged 3 to 10.
The low-profile extension adjoins the existing building; a large interior atrium flanked by multifunctional spaces forms the communicative heart of the complex. The kindergarten and elementary school each have separate entrances, allowing for both a spatial connection between the two areas and a functional separation.
The historic school building, with its light-colored exposed masonry and balanced horizontal facade structure, served as the reference for the extension. By proportionally translating the small-scale, solid, historic facade into a rear-ventilated facade with cement-bonded fiber panels, a contemporary dialogue between old and new is created, along with a natural connection to a new whole: the “Campus in the Park.”
This made it possible to realize a sustainable and structurally sound cladding for the timber-framed building, along with a precise definition of the building’s form extending to the minimalist roof edge.
The division of the facade panels emphasizes the boldly placed facade openings in the building structure with its extensive overhangs.
Accentuated bronze-colored elements enliven the clear façade structure, thereby introducing a playful element in the school centre.
