We all love old towns and we all love Italy, or similar places. With its narrow streets, fine-grained structures, laundry hanging in the air and open doors. Residents live and even work in the streets; children are safe because the neighborhood looks out for them. Of course this is a bit idealized; of course it’s a bit nostalgic, but why not create these qualities in new buildings as well?
What is essential in this regard is the outdoor space - the ground floor zone. Our vision is that of an outdoor living room. Don’t get us wrong, our aim is not to create a classic plaza with a fountain. Instead, the zone is a mix between play street, laneway, old-fashioned courtyard and garden.
The variety inherent in our transforming society and in our lifestyles is manifest in the fundamental structure and the range of apartment types. Each building and each apartment is unique but not pretentious. Each unit has a different view, different light, a different outdoor space. This variety is presently needed and will become increasingly essential in the future. Shared spaces and community courtyards form the basis for new forms of living together, of living and of working, for all stages of life.
