Grabenhof Park
The Grabenhof Park in Kriens is conceived as a central open space within the Luzern Süd development area, responding to the increasing density around Mattenhof. The aim is to create a climate-resilient park that combines ecological functions with a wide range of uses, while remaining legible as a coherent open space system.
The design is based on a clear spatial structure in which water management, vegetation, and use are carefully coordinated. Along the Schlimbach, a near-natural water corridor is formed with retention areas, differentiated riverbanks, and permeable substrates. These elements play a key role in flood management, promote biodiversity, and create stable habitats. An accompanying embankment path frames the space and defines the relationship between the natural area and the park landscape.
The adjacent park landscape is organized as an open common ground. Modeled meadow spaces and consistently unsealed surfaces support large-scale infiltration and help reduce summer heat stress. Use, movement, and recreation are directly integrated into the landscape, forming a continuous and clearly readable system.
A diverse program strengthens the park’s social and functional diversity. A playground is embedded within the landscape and provides quality space for different age groups. Community gardens allow for long-term appropriation by local residents. Barbecue areas act as informal meeting points, while a running track integrates sport and everyday movement into the park.
A robust tree structure organizes the space over time, developing from individual plantings into a continuous canopy. This shapes the microclimate, provides shade, and reinforces the spatial identity within the urban context of Luzern Süd.
A café is positioned along the main movement axes as a social focal point, activating key areas of the park. It connects different uses and enhances the overall quality of stay.
Grabenhof Park understands landscape as a primary structuring element of the overall development. Natural space, water systems, and use are interwoven into an integrated and sustainable open space system.
