Norway's Snøhetta has won SIGNA Group's Bolzano Cable Car competition, which will make the Virgolo/Virgl mountain in Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol in Italy, accessible to visitors for the first time since its historic funicular closed in 1976.
The design consists of two ring-like stations that are one minute and eleven seconds apart. The upper station includes a restaurant, a café, an infinity pool, an event space and a landscape for taking in the views of the surrounding Dolomites.
Snøhetta beat Coop Himmelb(l)au and Zaha Hadid Architects in the invited competition; the latter just finished the Messner Mountain Museum, also in South Tyrol.
The cable car project is expected to be complete in 2018.
