Preliminary Design Concept for U.S. Olympic Museum Unveiled

The 60,000-square-foot museum will be located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, just a few blocks away from the United States Olympic Committee headquarters. Consisting of a U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, exhibition hall, theater, event space, retail, a broadcast studio, and "Champions Plaza," the museum "spirals up and outwards from a central atrium, drawing the public in at its base and propelling them up through the galleries," according to architect Elizabeth Diller. She further explains that the building, inspired by the movement of athletes, "frames a new downtown public plaza below the view of Pike's Peak, and extends a new axis to the America the Beautiful Park West."

Diller Scofidio + Renfro is working on the United States Olympic Museum with a team of collaborators: Anderson Mason Dale Architects of Denver (architect of record); Gallagher and Associates of Washington, D.C. (exhibit designer); Pacific Studio of Seattle (exhibit fabricator); and Barrie Projects of Cleveland (national museum consultant). GE Johnson of Colorado Springs will serve as general contractor.
