Nominees for 19th EUmies Awards Announced

A list of 410 works nominated for the 2026 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards (EUmies Awards) has been released by the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. The nominations showcase the most significant built works in the EU completed between May 2023 and April 2025.

It's been a year and a half since Study Pavilion on the campus of the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, by Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke, and Gabriel García Márquez Library in Barcelona by SUMA Arquitectura were named winners of the 18th EUmies Awards in the Architecture and Emerging Architecture categories, respectively. In that time, an increasing move toward adaptive reuse and renovation projects has continued apace, most evident in the House Europe! initiative that launched earlier this year and is aiming to reshape EU laws toward such projects and away from demolition and new construction. Accordingly, 44% of the 410 nominated works are transformations of existing buildings, higher than in previous cycles. That said, the most recent EUmies Awards winner that was renovation rather than new construction was the Transformation of 530 dwellings — Grand Parc Bordeaux in 2019. Which and what types of projects win the two EUmies Awards—Architecture and Emerging Architecture—will be determined by the seven-person jury that was revealed today as well:

In more numbers, the 19th cycle of the EUmies Awards includes:

410 significant built works from
40 European countries with
32 works from France (the most) followed by
24 from Spain and
21 from Italy (the 37 other countries have between 1 and 16 works each).
40 shortlisted projects will be selected by the
7-person jury (Smiljan Radić Clarke, Carl Bäckstrand, Chris Briffa, Zaiga Gaile, Tina Gregorič, Nikolaus Hirsch, Rosa Rull Bertrán) in January 2026, after which
7 finalists will be named in February 2026, and
2 winners (Architecture and Emerging) will be awarded in April 2026, receiving
60,000€ (Architecture Winner) and
30,000€ (Emerging Winner).
