Spirit of Space visits the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito, California, to speak with Olson Kundig partner Alan Maskin about the design of the play spaces inside and outside the museum.
Although the filmmakers at Spirit of Space speak with Maskin, who worked as a school teacher before becoming an architect, fellow Olson Kundig principal Marlene Chen, executives from the Bay Area Discovery Museum, and landscape architect Roderick Wyllie from Surfacedesign, it's the kids who are the stars of the short film. Their actions clearly convey how well the designers crafted spaces and activities — the Tot Spot, the Try It Studio, and How Things Work, among others — that are fun and, just as importantly, educational. At eleven minutes, the film gives a lot of depth on Olson Kundig's design, while capturing a lot of kids in what Spirit of Space calls "serendipitous moments" that show "how people truly use space."
