Bayn Coffee, located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Qasr Al Muwaiji in Al Ain, is nestled between an oasis of palm trees on a historically significant landmark - the birthplace of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the U.A.E. Styled Habitat drew inspiration from the site's rich history, including its early 20th-century mudbrick architecture.

The design integrates a new structure into the surrounding landscape, blending past and present. The cafe, a double-skinned reflective glass box, sits elevated between two palm trees—hence the name ‘Bayn,’ meaning ‘the in-between’ in Arabic. The juxtaposition of history and modernity, desert and oasis, and reflections and reality creates a harmonious blend of nature and design. The aim was to minimize visible elements that might detract from the beauty of the historical surroundings while highlighting the palm trees within the space.

Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows dissolve boundaries, extending the view and establishing a connection to nature. Visitors are greeted by a sloping clay-plastered ceiling focusing on the central coffee bar, emphasizing the coffee-making process. A clay-plastered wall serves as a backdrop to the bronze patina coffee bar.

The furniture, reminiscent of traditional low seating, adds a nostalgic touch, while the natural tones of eclectic modern pieces complement the warm palette. The project showcases the raw beauty of materials like glass, plaster, and steel, allowing the architecture to recede and the landscape to shine.

The deliberate and clean material junctions reflect a focus on durability as sustainability, allowing the space to remain grounded in its historical origins while fostering a sense of place.
