The Netherlands' Mecanoo and Luxembourg's Metaform have won an international competition to design a new Velodrome and Sports Complex in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg.
The area is known for its thermal baths, so fittingly the new complex will also feature a swimming pool, in addition to the velodrome and multi-sports hall. The volume of the velodrome is expressed through curved facades lifted above a landscaped roof, while the swimming pool and sports hall are embedded into the landscape. This follows from the prescribed re-naturalization of the sloping agricultural site. Fronting the complex is a center square that connects to parking as well as a future school planned for the site. The renderings indicate longspan timber for the velodrome and sports hall, while the humid environment of the pool is capped by a finished ceiling that angles upward to generously glazed walls and an outdoor pool.
