Apartment : 8C Ratna Aastha
Surat, India
All four sides of the apartment facing onto vast open spaces providing views of the city skyline were exploited by locating the dining space at the center. This brings all the people and spaces of the house together to enjoy the sunrise and the sunset at breakfasts and suppers. The other spaces are tucked away along the periphery, guarded by layers of frosted glass and sliding slatted wooden screens that filter the gentle glow and breeze, ideal for sunny humid nature of the coastal climate. The wood planks and stone slabs of earthen textures and muted colour tones define the space; while furniture and lamps with soft cotton and silk furnishings in bright tones along with a few artefacts occupy these spaces as objects that mellow down the apparent grid structure.
